RESEARCH Qualitative The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the challenges faced by nurses/carers of the dementia patient and dementia patients themselves. This study used a life story work (LSW) method to investigate the experiences of four people with dementia, their family carers and care staff across four care settings within an NHS Health and Social Care Trust in the UK. An individualized approach was taken in each case in response to the wishes of those involved. Three cases developed a life story book, which is a photograph album or scrapbook that includes, for example, photographs and text to depict a persons story; one person s story was depicted in a pen picture, which was a two-page written account of the person s life.
